Discover the rich history, cultural significance, and essence of Harlem, the renowned neighborhood famously known as the global hub of black culture. Harlem, the birthplace of the "Harlem Renaissance," a cultural movement that originated in the 1890s, holds deep roots in the migration of African-Americans from rural South to urban North after years of slavery and struggle for emancipation. Experience a Baptist Mass, accompanied by traditional Gospel Choir music, where you can clap your hands to the uplifting tunes of gospel songs and relive the original spiritual ambiance of the Gospel Mass. This religious tradition evolved from the era of slavery, where black people were prohibited from reading and participating in white worship. The contemporary Mass reflects the slaves' religious beliefs and practices through the vibrant choruses and movements of the ceremony. Although Gospel music was initially a strictly religious genre, it has evolved into a popular music style that has influenced other music and popular culture.

At the time of this writing (March 1, 2023), many Baptist churches still do not allow tourists or non-members of their congregation to enter. We have identified a few churches where visitors are welcome. Wearing a face mask is mandatory. Services are broadcast online via Zoom for much of the congregation, and we cannot know in advance how many will be waiting in person. We have never been denied entry since the reopening, but if that were to happen, we would modify the tour by going deeper into the Harlem neighborhood to maintain the 4 hour tour length.
